The area around Alibag was once referred to as ‘Ashtagar’ which literally means 8 gardens or plantations. The area has had a colourful history from the mythological times to the Hindu period followed by Islamic, Portuguese, Maratha and British rule. Probably the most fascinating aspect of the town is a Jewish enclave where the residents claim to have come here 2 millennia ago from West Asia. Join us as we explore the ‘Hamptons of Mumbai’ on foot.
