Mumbai of the 1940s was a different city from the Mumbai we know today. For one, the film studios were in Dadar. And two, the Dadar-Matunga area had just come up as Mumbai’s first planned suburb. For immigrants to the city who wanted jobs in the film industry and homes close to the studios, the new suburb was a god-sent opportunity. And so, like a magnet, it attracted many film folk who were moving from a declining industry in Kolkata to a resurgent one in Mumbai. One quiet by-lane in Matunga, bit by bit, became the domain of the Punjabis, the Kapoor family in particular, and was dubbed the Punjabi galli. On our brand-new heritage walk #PunjabiGalli, we wander in and around the Galli encountering not just the film personalities who lived here, but also important city institutions that came up nearby.
