After the walls of the Fort of Bombay were ordered to be demolished by the Governor, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, in 1862, a new vision of Bombay - Urbs Prima in Indis or India's foremost city - started getting built. On the vast open Esplanade outside the Fort came up Free Town, the original New Bombay. Opposite the erstwhile north-west ramparts of the Fort, a trapezoid-shaped area was called the Esplanade Estate. On our #EsplanadeEstates heritage walk, we explore this planned precinct and discover the buildings and institutions it houses.
