While most of us are aware of the Khojas, do you know that they are not strictly a homogenous community, but are divided into various groups: Khoja Ismāʿīlis, Khoja Ithnā‘asharis, and Khoja Sunnis? At our online talk #MumbaiKhojas, South Asian Studies scholar Hussain Jasani will trace the history of the Khoja migration to Mumbai and discuss how and when these three distinct religious identities evolved, internal and external factors affecting such redefinition of identities, and how their shared heritage sites have evolved to be exclusively associated with individual Khoja groups.

About the speaker:

Hussain Jasani is the head of South Asian Studies at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, London. Before joining the Institute in 2012, he served as the CEO of ITREB India. Mr Jasani has an MA from SOAS, University of London, where he specialised in Islam in South Asia, and is currently studying for his PhD. He also has multiple qualifications in Management and Education from Asia, Europe and North America, and has presented academic papers at various universities.
