The contemporary iconography associated with the city of Bombay as a Gateway to India (when you land on shore, traveling by ship from the West) has morphed into a surprising variety of meanings for the local residents of places like Prague, London, Manchester, Yangon, Lisbon and Colombo. Forgotten objects from the city have been collected from these places far away from Mumbai by collectors Sangeeta and Ratnesh Mathur. At our Online Talk #BombayOutsideMumbai, they share images from their collection and attempt to build a chronology around the serendipity of these collections. Their focus is on the juxtaposition of printing technology with the found objects of Bombay and the chronology of the city itself.
The talk link will be shared a couple of hours before the event
About the speakers
Sangeeta & Ratnesh Mathur are a Delhi-based couple, who have previously lived in Mumbai. Avid collectors of prints & books on India, they eventually wish to curate their collections on towns in India in a new museum venture. Some of their collections on the Picture Postcards history of Indian towns from 1896 to 1947 have been showcased in a book ‘Picturesque India’ published by them two years back.
