Shortly after the Treaty of Paris formally concluded the Revolutionary War between Britain and America, American ships began to sail to the coasts of India to establish trading links. Most of these initial arrivals came from ports in New England, but also from Philadelphia and New York. These early merchant mariners were followed by American missionaries, diplomats and travel writers. At our Online Talk #Boston2Bombay, researcher and scholar Dr Jenny Rose highlights some of these visitors’ impressions of the places and people they encountered in and around Bombay in the late 18th- and early 19th-centuries.

About the speaker

Jenny Rose holds a PhD in Ancient Iranian Studies from Columbia University, New York. She teaches a class in Zoroastrian Studies at Claremont Graduate University in California, and has lectured extensively at academic and cultural institutions, and Zoroastrian Association events throughout North America, as well as in Europe and India. Dr. Rose has published two books on the Zoroastrian religion. The present talk draws upon her most recent research, published in late 2019, entitled Between Boston and Bombay: Cultural and Commercial Encounters of Yankees and Parsees, 1771-1865 (Palgrave Macmillan).
