For India’s railway infrastructure in its early days, the Bhor Ghat was the missing link connecting the main port of Mumbai to the hinterland towards India's south-east through the Sahyadri range. The ghat gains 660 meters altitude in 27 kms, resulting in a steep ruling gradient of 1 in 37, making a railway line through it a challenging task. Constructed between 1856 and 1863, the Bhor Ghat section is one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century. It is now a busy section with 125 movements in both directions daily (before the pandemic struck). At our Online Talk #RailwayChronicles, railway enthusiast Apurva Bahadur focuses on the the lower section of the incline, documenting its features and plotting the timelines of this remote length of track. 

About the speaker

An electronics engineer by education, Apurva Bahadur is a consulting technical writer working on service and installation documentation, especially for the engineering sector.  His passion, however, is the railways. He is a train track trekker, photographer and a student of the railway history of India. A spin-off from this passion is the foray into industrial archaeology, to study and document the railway heritage of India, particularly of hidden areas where no supposedly sane person goes.
