While everyone is aware of the presence of dinosaurs once on earth, very few are aware of the presence of these lost giants on the Indian sub-continent as well. In 1981, palaeontologists stumbled upon dinosaur bones and fossils during a regular geological survey of the mineral-rich area of Balasinor in Gujarat, especially the village of Rahioli. They found dinosaur egg hatcheries and fossils of 3 documented species - Rajasaurus narmadensis, Rahiolsaurus gujaratensis and the titanosaurid sauropods. At our Online Talk #EarthsLostGiants, amateur palaeontologist and conservationist Nawabzadi Aaliya Sultana Babi takes us on a journey through nature’s forgotten past and explains the significance of the discoveries of Rahioli and Balasinor in the world of palaeontology.
About the speaker
Nawabzadi Aaliya Sultana Babi is the daughter of the Late Nawab Saheb of Balasinor in Gujarat, and also an amateur palaeontologist and conservationist. She has actively fought for the preservation of the precious relics of extinct dinosaurs species that once roamed the lands of her forefathers, and has taken it upon herself to advocate for the protection and preservation of the rare dinosaur fossil site in the village of Rahioli near Balasinor. She is fondly called “The Dinosaur Princess” or “Dr. Dinosaur” - an epithet given by the media and tourists.
