As we travel through any built human environment, we are bound to encounter an object that does not have any 'practical' function apart from serving a decorative purpose or as a marker of a moment. Sometimes, this object catches our attention, and at other times we move on. Whatever the response, we humans continue to populate our lived environments with them as they add to or change the meaning of the space, creating a memory. This is the basic premise of art in public spaces. If done right, public art enhances the lives of people bringing in positive and beneficial experiences. At our Online Talk #OutsideTheGallery, art curator Yamini Telkar takes a look at art in public spaces in India since independence and focusses on some iconic works.
