#OutsideTheGallery – Art In Public Spaces By Yamini Telkar: Talk 250

As we travel through any built human environment, we are bound to encounter an object that does not have any 'practical' function apart from serving a decorative purpose or as a marker of a moment. Sometimes, this object catches our attention, and at other times we move on. Whatever the response, we humans continue to populate our lived environments with them as they add to or change the meaning of the space, creating a memory. This is the basic premise of art in public spaces. If done right, public art enhances the lives of people bringing in positive and beneficial experiences. At our Online Talk #OutsideTheGallery, art curator Yamini Telkar takes a look at art in public spaces in India since independence and focusses on some iconic works. About the speaker Yamini Telkar has an M.Phil. focused on Art and Aesthetics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, an M.A. in Ancient Culture from St Xaviers College, Mumbai and a B.F.A. from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. A trained artist, she is well-versed in art history and is passionate about making it accessible to a wider audience. In her early career, she taught art history at the Sir J. J. School of Art and National Institute of Fashion Technology, both in Mumbai. Now she periodically teaches Modern art practice in India, folk, and tribal art practice in art colleges. She has been associated with Bangalore International Airport as the curator for the Art Progamme. She also curates exhibitions and has published several writings on individual artists as well as general essays on art.
