After Kalinga was destroyed by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka (famously at the battle where he repented his actions and embraced Buddhism) in the 3rd century BCE, the kingdom went through a revival in the 2nd century BCE under a Jain king named Kharavela when it once again became a powerful state. Inscriptions in the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves in Odisha speak of his achievements. At our Online Talk #KalingaAndKharavela, Jain scholar Dr Renuka Porwal focusses on the Jain heritage of the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves and especially Kharavela’s inscription to present a picture of Kalinga under Kharavela. About the speaker: Dr Renuka Porwal did her Ph.D. in Gujarati literature from Mumbai University on the renowned Jain saint, Acharya Buddhisagarji. After her doctorate, she worked on the Jaina site, Kankali Tila at Mathura, under the guidance of Dr Sagarmalji Jain. Currently she is a visiting lecturer and a convener for the certificate course on ‘Jain Art & Archaeology’ at the Department of Ancient Indian Culture at Sathaye College, Mumbai. She has presented more than 50 research papers and written more than 300 articles in many publications and journals in English, Hindi and Gujarati. She is also the recipient of many awards and medals.
