The Second World War involved everyone, everywhere. 2.5 million Indian men (and over 1000 women) volunteered to join the British Imperial forces, and are much less known in South Asia than their comrades who joined Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army (INA). At our #OnlineTalk #IndiaAndWW2, British historian Ghee Bowman, who has spent ten years researching the Indian Army in Europe, will present some of his findings: of Punjabi mule-handlers in France in 1940, of Indian soldiers in Britain, of Indian Prisoners-of-War held by the Germans and Italians, and the truth behind the real ‘Great Escape’.
About the speaker:
Dr Ghee Bowman is a historian, teacher and story-teller based in the UK. His research into Indian soldiers in Europe in the Second World War has taken him to five countries, and led to two books: The Indian Contingent: The Forgotten Muslim Soldiers of Dunkirk and The Great Épinal Escape: Indian Prisoners of War in German Hands. During his six decades, he has worked in the theatre, for NGOs and in education in the UK and around the world. Married with two children, he is a Quaker and Woodcraft Folk leader.
