With the Constitution of India in force, an election system started with the first polls in 1952. In a country which was known for its kings and queens, electing its rulers through ballot paper was a unique idea. Started with huge excitement, the election system evolved over time. Election machinery, mechanisms and polling processes have seen several changes through its history. At our Online Talk #IndiaVotes, journalist Shyamlal Yadav gives us a glimpse of the journey of the country's polling system from what it was in 1952 and what it is today. About the speaker Shyamlal Yadav is one of the pioneers of the effective use of RTI for investigative reporting. He is a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and has been part of global investigations like Paradise Papers, Fincen Files, Pandora Papers, Uber Files and Hidden Treasures. He is a two-time winner of the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism in the investigative reporting category and the ACJ Award for Investigative Reporting. Besides investigative work, he keeps writing on social and political issues. He is also the author of the recently-published book, "At The Heart Of Power - The Chief Ministers Of Uttar Pradesh" and "Journalism Through RTI: Information, Investigation, Impact."
