An amazing variety of symbols are thrown at us everyday - from religious symbols to secular ones, from myth and history to cinema and life - everything from Om to emojis. At our Online Talk #BetweenThe Lines, cultural researcher Urmi Chanda gives a broad overview of the most significant symbols occurring in Indian culture, and mixes and matches both, historical and semiotic perspectives, to give the most relevant meanings and applications of certain symbols. Under scrutiny will be some non-traditional symbols such as people, slang, and emojis too! The talk will also examine the ways in which the symbols evolve and intersect, and will, hopefully, help us to read a little better between the lines.
About the speaker
Urmi Chanda is an independent culture writer and researcher, having studied ancient Indian history and culture, comparative mythology, and mysticism but she likes to describe herself as a constant seeker. Her primary passions are religious, culture and peace studies. She has been a journalist for over a decade and has recently pivoted to the social sector. She is currently pursuing her professional doctorate in Interfaith Studies from the UK and is heading a program of interfaith dialogue in India, with the US-based non-profit organisation, Seeds of Peace.
Please note that the event link will be shared on email 45 minutes before the scheduled time of the talk.
