Contrary to popular belief, the magnificent colonial buildings that adorn Mumbai's landscape were not solely the creations of the British. Not only were many of these structures financed by wealthy Indian businessmen, but they were also constructed, and sometimes even designed, by Indian contractors and engineers. These unsung heroes worked tirelessly in the shadow of British architects and engineers, contributing their knowledge, expertise and skill to raise these awe-inspiring and magnificent edifices.

At our Online Talk #OnContract, architect Esa Shaikh documents the significant contribution of Mumbai’s contractors, engineers, architects and labourers who worked alongside the British and their role in developing the colonial city of Bombay and constructing these landmark buildings. He highlights the diverse and rich history of Bombay’s development, and deepens our appreciation for the people who made it possible.

About the speaker

Esa Shaikh is an Urban Researcher with a passion for architecture and urban design. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture in 2014 and his Master’s degree in Urban Design in 2016 from Mumbai University. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Thakur School of Architecture and Planning where he contributes to the academic development of young architects and designers. A versatile professional who devotes his time equally to research and academia, Esa has been documenting the contribution of Indian contractors in the making of colonial Bombay.
