The past three decades have been a period of unprecedented flux in Mumbai. Since the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on 6 December 1992, the city has seen riots, communal violence, serial blasts, gang wars, new equations in politics, terrorist attacks, the rise of new townships and natural calamities, all of which have changed the city forever. From a city of mills, it has transformed to one of malls. Its iconic festivals, such as Ganesh Utsav and Govinda, once primarily celebrated by the poor and the middle class, have become commercialized. At our Online Talk #CityInFlux, author and journalist Jitendra Dixit documents the change in the city’s character, from its physical appearance and civic issues, to real estate and politics.

About the speaker

Jitendra Dixit has been reporting on crime, conflict and politics in Mumbai and India for over 20 years. As a crime journalist, Jitendra has reported widely on Mumbai underworld. He has covered the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks from ground zero for Star News and has filed several ground reports on the Kashmir conflict. In 2015, he won the RedInk Award for his documentary on the Kashmir elections. He has written six books, four in English and two in Hindi. Currently, he is the West India Editor of the television channel ABP News
