From the arrow that Lord Rama shot in the ground to create Banganga to the swarm of bees rescuing Mount Mary from destruction there are enough and more myths and legends of the city. In fact, they seem to power the city as much as money, the other foundation on which the city is built. At our Online Talk #MythicalMumbai, Utkarsh Patel and Arundhuti Dasgupta, co-founders of The Mythology Project, discuss the various myths that layer the streets of this financial megapolis - the legends and folktales of the Koli community, the stories behind the many temples dedicated to the goddesses of fever and pestilence, and myths about demons and warrior goddesses.

About the speakers

Utkarsh Patel teaches comparative mythology at the University of Mumbai. An author and TEDx speaker, his books include Shakuntala, The Woman Wronged, Satyavati and Kannaki's Anklet: An Epic from the South of the Vindhyas. Arundhuti Dasgupta is an author, editor and journalist, and writes on the intersection of mythology, politics and culture. She has co-authored two books that are a collection of stories about folk beliefs on the supernatural, published by Penguin and Puffin India - The Weretiger: Stories of the Supernatural and Spooked: Stories of the Supernatural. Both of them are the co-founders of The Mythology Project, a self-funded initiative to preserve the stories of the ancient world and map their influence on contemporary society.
