The first half of the #TextilesTales workshop aims to raise awareness on identifying different natural fibers and help participants differentiate between machine and handmade fabrics. The participants can carry fabrics from their household to understand their quality and significance Savita Suri will narrate stories about the handloom sector in India. 

The second half of the workshop will focus on Warli art, its importance and symbolism. The art workshop will be conducted by Dinesh Barap, a young Walri artist who will guide the participants through the underlying symbolism of designs. Participants will paint warli art on fabric under the guidance of the artist as he narrates traditional warli folk stories.

About the artists: 

Savitha Suri runs an online community that actively engages in sharing knowledge and experiences of handcrafted textile history and traditions . A researcher, author and curator, she uses her background in Sociology and Media Studies to research, document and raise awareness on the complex ecosystems that textiles develop and thrive in. As President of the WICCI Maharashtra Handloom Council, she is currently leading an initiative to recreate a traditional textile of the native East Indian community of Mumbai.

She was a part of the first Indian delegation that participated in the Silk in Lyon, France and curated a Travelling Museum of Indian Silks for the event comprising close to 60-70 pieces of Indian silks.

Artist Dinesh Barap, is the only person from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park region to practice the art form that he learnt from his grandmother.
