ThisDayThatYear: MUMBAI GETS A NEW RAILWAY

This day, 111 years ago, the Harbour Branch line of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway opened to freight traffic, connecting the main line at Kurla to the new cotton bunder at Reay Road, enabling the transport of cotton from the hinterland to the port. Suburban services didn't begin till 1924, when the line was extended to Victoria Terminus (now CSMT) by an overhead railway.
