ThisDayThatYear: A GATEWAY THIRTEEN YEARS LATE

This day, 97 years ago, the Gateway of India was opened to the public by the then Viceroy of India, Rufus Isaacs. The Gateway commemorates the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India thirteen years earlier. Instead of the Gateway, a plaster-of-Paris replica of the Taj Mahal had welcomed the royal couple then.
