Today is the 157th birth anniversary of Dr Rukhmabai. A child bride at the age of 11, she refused to consummate her marriage with her husband, and her legal battle to be 'the best judge of her own choices' ultimately led to the Age of Consent Act in 1891 which raised the minimum age for consent to 12.
