ThisDayThatYear: THE MASTER AND HIS MASTERPIECE



Today marks the 174th birth anniversary of Frederick William Stevens, the architect responsible for designing many of Mumbai’s iconic buildings. Born in Bath in the UK, he came to Mumbai in 1867 as an Assistant Engineer in the Public Works Department of the Government of India. His first major work in the city was the Royal Alfred Sailors' Home, today the Maharashtra State Police Headquarters.
