ThisDayThatYear: 112 years ago, scientist Dr Homi J Bhabha was born



This day, 112 years ago, scientist Dr Homi J Bhabha was born in a bungalow called Kenilworth on Peddar Road. He studied at Mumbai's Elphinstone College and the Royal Institute of Science before leaving for Cambridge for his doctorate in nuclear physics. While he was on a brief holiday in India in 1939, World War II broke out, and he ended up staying back in India. He founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1945, and the Atomic Energy Establishment in Trombay in 1954. The residential quarters of the Atomic Energy Establishment now stand at his birthplace.
