The year was 1947. Independence brought jubilation to Mumbai, but the celebrations were soon followed by a more difficult reality. Severe food shortages and continued rationing became part of everyday life, even as the Government devised scheme after scheme to combat the food insecurities of the time. Rationing and prohibition shaped how the city ate, with households and restaurants inventing ingenious recipes and adapting to strict controls on food and social gatherings. At our Online Talk #TheTasteOfFreedom, author and food writer Meher Mirza scrolls back to those decades, exploring the tumult of those early years. She focusses a lens on the food challenges faced by India after independence and Partition, and chronicles the various initiatives taken by the Indian Government to combat it.
