Khaki Tours was founded by Bharat Gothoskar in 2015 to create awareness about Mumbai’s history and heritage in a fun and interesting manner, starting with localities like Parel, Lalbaug, Gamdevi, Bhuleshwar and Chowpatty, places not typically associated with the word ‘heritage’. In November 2016, Khaki launched possibly the world’s first and only #UrbanSafari, open jeep tours showcasing the city’s heritage buildings and architecture. Khaki Tours has also added food walks, cruises, day tours, themed tours (26/11 Attacks, Art Deco, etc.) and kids’ workshops to its offerings. The logical next step was outbound tours with a focus on heritage and culture, both in India and abroad. In 2018, the Khaki Heritage Foundation (KHF) was formed with the objectives of conservation, archiving and generating awareness about heritage in Mumbai and beyond. One of the Foundation’s initiatives is the KHAKI Lab, a multi-purpose cultural space dedicated to the city of Mumbai. The word KHAKI is an acronym for Keeping Heritage Alive & Kicking in India!
Bharat Gothoskar studied mechanical engineering and business management, but actually wanted to be a conservation architect. The city’s history and heritage has been an abiding interest in him since childhood, and that made him give up a 16 years career in sales and marketing with for corporate houses like Godrej, Pidilite and Mahindra to pursue his passion of #HeritageEvangelism through experiential travel.
For everyone involved with Khaki, heritage is a passion, and the intention has always been to do more than just creating awareness about Mumbai’s heritage through the heritage walks and tours we curate and conduct. The Khaki Heritage Foundation was set up to formalise and give structure to this intention. Our mission is in our name: K.H.A.K.I. – Keeping Heritage Alive and Kicking in India.
