Śākta Tantra is a tradition within Hindu thought that centres the Divine Feminine (Śakti) as the ultimate source of all energy and creation. It is often misunderstood as something obscure or mystical at the margins; but in reality, it is a complex phenomenon integrating philosophy, ritual, and lived practice. At our Online Talk #ŚāktaTantra, archaeologist and scholar Shalaka Bhandare-Patil introduces the conceptual foundations of Śākta and Tantric worship, focusing on the nature of Śakti and her place within the wider Tantric framework. She explores both the intellectual and philosophical dimensions of Tantra, as well as its practical aspects, highlighting the distinction between scriptural study and actual ritual experience. Through the concepts of mantra and yantra as non-material and material aids to ritual, she reflects on how Tantra operates as a holistic system involving text, body, and the transmission of knowledge, moving beyond common misconceptions.
