Indian princely states occupied a unique position within the subcontinent under British rule. Neither fully independent nor directly administered by the British, they formed a complex network of kingdoms and chiefdoms that covered nearly two-fifths of India and played a vital role in its political and cultural history. At our Online Talk #PrincelyPasts, Dr Sheetal Panchikar offers a fascinating journey into the world of Indian princely states and their transformation during the making of modern India. She explores royal courts, traditions, festivals, architecture, art patronage, education, and the lives of princes and eminent women, while also examining the impact of British policies and political reforms. She sheds light on the relationship between the princely states and India’s freedom movement, the establishment of the Chamber of Princes, and the dramatic process of integration after independence. Blending political, social, and cultural history, she provides fresh insights into a significant yet often overlooked chapter of India’s past.
