‘Madras Inspired Hues’ is an ongoing participatory project that explores Chennai through the memories, associations and stories people attach to colour. When colours take material form, they become familiar objects. What can an everyday object tell us about a city? A seemingly ordinary object might lead us into a family memory, a neighbourhood, a craft tradition or a kitchen, before travelling further into histories of trade, migration, geographical indications and cultural exchange. Objects thus become starting points for discovering Chennai. At our Online Talk #MadrasThroughObjects on Madras Day, architects and urban researchers Srishti Prabakar Nadathur and Thirupurasundari Sevvel move between the personal and the collective, the tangible and the intangible, and explore how objects carry stories far larger than themselves. Through these objects, they invite audiences to share, question and rediscover the many cities we carry with us.

About the speakers
Srishti Prabakar Nadathur is an architect, urban researcher, artist and storyteller whose work explores cities through participation, memory, heritage and everyday life. Her practice moves between research and creative public engagement, using formats such as mapping, illustration, zines, heritage walks and participatory workshops to uncover different ways of reading and representing cities. Her work in Chennai (and now multiple cities in Europe) has included heritage trails, visual documentation and collaborative explorations of the city's tangible and intangible heritage.

Thirupurasundari Sevvel is a heritage architect, urban planner, historian, curator, educator and storyteller whose work bridges architecture, conservation, everyday heritage and community memory. Through Nam Veedu Nam Oor Nam Kadhai, she has curated over 100 exhibitions using household objects, personal artefacts and oral histories to uncover lesser-known stories of Madras. Her practice also encompasses heritage walks, participatory mapping, architectural conservation and educational initiatives that make heritage accessible across generations. Through her work, everyday objects and materials become ways of understanding the larger cultural, social and spatial histories of the city.

Their project ‘Madras Inspired Hues’ brings these interests together by using colour as a starting point for conversations about the people, places, objects and memories through which a city is collectively understood.
