Food is often celebrated as heritage — something to explore, experience, and preserve. In India, practices and processes of production, consumption, and circulation of edibles are ubiquitously discussed with their ‘historical’ contexts across media-platforms and literary and public expressions. At the same time, appeals to keep food “free from politics” are common. But are thoughts about foods and their histories apolitical? And are they limited to understanding food as heritage? At our Online Talk #HistoricisingFood, social historian Shrikant Botre comments on the “popular” frames of heritage frequently used to discuss alimentary matters and the need to go beyond them. Drawing on references from colonial times, he explores how food was used to ‘fix’ Indian identities as well as focuses on the socio-politics unleashed “through” food while reflecting on its meanings.
