#HandmadeInIndia: in association with Swadesh

Handicrafts in India are at least as old as the Indus Valley Civilisation, if not older. Among the artefacts excavated in Mohenjo Daro and Harappa were handmade terracotta toys and figurines, hand-carved soapstone seals, painted pottery, hand-cast figurines in copper and bronze made using the lost-wax process, jewellery made with stone beads, and fragments of cotton textiles. All these indigenous crafts – stoneware, metalware, pottery and handlooms – continue to thrive in India, and have been influenced by techniques introduced from Persia, evolving into unique creations with a distinctively Indian identity. On our #HandmadeInIndia walk in association with Swadesh, we look at the exhibits displayed inside the Swadesh store to understand the fascinating world of Indian handicrafts.
