Long before remotes became an extension of our hands and algorithms began shaping our preferences, there was Doordarshan — the lone, resonant voice of Indian television. In the era of black-and-white screens and fixed broadcast hours, families across the country gathered around their television sets for more than just entertainment; it was a shared cultural moment. Between 6 pm and 10 pm, the nation seemed to pause. News bulletins influenced thought, Sunday serials sparked conversations, and educational programmes quietly ignited curiosity in distant corners. At our Online Talk #DoordarshanDiaries, veteran journalist and news anchor Sheila Chaman captures the essence of a remarkable period spanning three decades of change. She offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes of Doordarshan’s evolution, from its humble origins to its role as a unifying presence across India.
