Marine Drive may be South Mumbai’s western seafront today, but the far humbler Maharshi Karve Marg on the other side of the tracks was the original seafront. Adjacent to the shore were grazing grounds - the Churney Oarts - on which cemeteries later came up. In the mid-1800s, the railway line pushed the sea further back, spurring the development of these idyllic oarts into residential and commercial real estate. On our #ChurneyOarts heritage walk, we walk on this fringe of the former west coast, narrating stories of its development, interspersed with the sights of remnants from the days when these parts were oarts.
