In the 1930s, the Backbay Reclamation came up to the west of the Oval Maidan, creating a new patch of property for land-starved Mumbai. A new residential district took shape there with an architectural style distinctively different from the colonial Neoclassical and Neo Gothic architectural styles dominating the cityscape – Art Deco. This vibrant international style born just a decade earlier with the arrival of new construction materials such as RCC was adopted by the first swadeshi architects to depict a young vibrant India at the cusp of independence. At our #ArtDekho walk powered by Swadesh, the precinct’s premier Indian handicrafts store, we walk through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble of Mumbai to understand Art Deco and what it means to Mumbai.
