On the laterite plateaus along the Konkan coast of Maharashtra and Goa, you will find geoglyphs – prehistoric rock carvings created by scraping and engraving the rock surface. These geoglyphs depict animals (including some that are now extinct in the region), human figures, and geometric designs. Many of these figures are large, some over 45 feet long, and can be seen clearly only from a height. Believed to date back to the Mesolithic period, they provide important evidence of early human life, beliefs, and the ancient environment of the Konkan region. At our Online Talk #AerialArt, archaeologist Rutwij Apte who has been researching the Konkan geoglyphs for the last nine years, will delve into their origins, their archaeological importance and the measures taken for their protection and conservation.
