While play is universal to animals, games with set rules are a distinctly human trait. Sedentary games (i.e. games you sit down and play) have been unearthed in all material cultures, but remain a comparatively understudied aspect of archaeology. At our Online Talk #AncientGames, researcher, writer and educator Raamesh Gowri Raghavan, uses game boards and pieces unearthed in excavations, games etched on monument floors, heirlooms, depictions in literature, and ethnological reports, to present the rich opportunities to be had by historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and museologists in the study of games to complete the picture of historical societies.
