“Indosphere” is a term coined by the American linguist James Matisoff in the late twentieth century. It describes the sphere of India’s cultural influence, which he saw as covering much of present-day Southeast Asia. Later scholars revisited the term and redrew its boundaries, making the region it covers larger than he first proposed. This Indic influence grew out of over two thousand years of mutually rewarding exchange between generations of Indians and the lands and peoples of the region. At our Online Talk #TheIndosphere, political scientist Dr Pulind Samant traces the causes of that influence and how it emerged, grew and endured for about two millennia. He also considers how India can keep a meaningful part of this ancestral influence, so that the region may continue to be called the Indosphere.
