Forested landscapes are often valued for their ecological importance, but they also preserve traces of a much deeper human past. Protected forest-scapes often provide ideal conditions for preserving archaeological records, including prehistoric stone tools and other lithic remains scattered across the landscape. At our Online Talk #HiddenHistory, archaeologist Akash Srinivas explores the rich potential of studying prehistoric archaeology in the forested landscapes of South Asia. Drawing on recent surveys from Bandhavgarh National Park and Tiger Reserve, Melghat Reserve, and the Aravalli Hills, he examines how lithic scatters can help us understand prehistoric occupation and activity across these regions. Using these case studies, he evaluates current methodological approaches, highlights their limitations, and opens a discussion on developing best practices for studying such surface scatters. Ultimately, he reflects on how archaeological investigations can contribute to a more integrated understanding of forest-scapes and help develop a more consolidated approach towards conserving the natural and cultural record of these marginalised landscapes.
