While the history and heritage of the island city of Mumbai and the Fort area in particular are well-documented, information on the history and development of the city’s suburbs is scarce to find. A case in point is Chembur. While many Mumbaikars are superficially aware of its cinema heritage like RK Studios, its Sindhi heritage like the food stalls at Chembur Camp, or even its industrial heritage thanks to the label 'gas chamber,' the suburb's heritage stories run far deeper. At our talk #ChemburChapters, lifelong Chembur resident and urban researcher Rohan Sharma takes us through the suburb's surprising evolution over the past thousand years. He explores traces that myriad rulers have left in the vicinity to the communities who have shaped its current multicultural fabric. He tells us more about the many schemes that have been designed for it, from the ambitious to the eccentric, and the institutions whose backstories even locals may not have heard about.
