What does it really mean to conserve heritage? Is it about preserving the physical remains of the past, the Western approach, or is it about ensuring the continuity of living traditions, the Eastern approach? At our Online Talk #PreservingThePast, architect and heritage consultant Neeraj Godse discusses these contrasting philosophical frameworks. Rather than framing these approaches as opposites, he highlights how they represent different conceptions of time, history, and authenticity, while also addressing the complexities that arise when they intersect in contexts where heritage is both physical and cultural. He ultimately reflects on the need for inclusive and context-sensitive conservation strategies that balance scientific integrity with cultural significance, and advocates for an integrated approach.
